How Should I Price Airbnb Gap Nights and Orphan Nights?
Updated September 17, 2026 · 5 min read
A gap night is a short opening trapped between two reservations. It is easy to ignore and hard to sell under a normal minimum stay. The solution is usually a targeted rule, not a lower price across every open date.
Why gap nights happen
Reservation lengths and arrival dates rarely line up perfectly. A three-night booking can leave one or two open nights before the next guest arrives.
The gap becomes an orphan when the standard minimum stay makes it unavailable to most searches.
Open the stay before discounting it
First make sure a guest can actually book the gap. A one-night or two-night exception may solve the problem without changing the nightly price.
Use time and demand together
A far-out gap can be held while nearby dates are still moving. A close-in gap has less time to sell and may justify a more flexible rule or price.
Check local demand and the cost of turning the property before accepting a very short stay.
Keep the adjustment contained
A gap-night rule should apply to the gap. Broad discounts can lower the value of dates that did not have the same problem.
